Discovery Time

Sometimes we get so used to thinking that 21st Century skills have to involve technology all the time. This week my year 1 students have been involved in developing the skills necessary for them as 21st Century learners through our play based program. They were creating using fabric, pegs and furniture when they upended tables and used the fabric and pegs to construct a cubby house. They were communicating and designing when they had to come to a consensus about how that cubby house would look and were collaborating with each other to build it. Another group of students were investigating aerodynamic principles when they were making prototypes of planes they had made out of straws and circles of paper, then testing them and discussing how they could be modified to fly further. Another group were creating objects using the xos or recycled boxes. These students were developing their creativity.
