1M and Marvel Superheroes

This term year 1 is undertaking an inquiry unit of work on ‘Heroes’ with the big idea that the decisions we make every day influence who we are and who we will become. Last week 1M went up to the computer lab with Mr Kent to have a go at creating their own original superhero on the Marvel Comics website – http://marvel.com/games/play/31/create_your_own_superhero. After a demonstration from Mr Kent on the IWB the kids were ready to attack the task and it was great to see their enthusiasm. Each child produced a unique and interesting superhero and the activity really allowed students to demonstrate their creativity as they mixed and matched elements of costumes, weapons and colours. Logging into the computers was a bit slow, but once they were in the majority of students were able to open the Marvel website, find the ‘Create your own superhero’ activity and complete the task independently. Only a few needed assistance with things like opening the website or finding how to change specific elements of their superhero. As a follow-up to take the activity to the next level, we hope to create a class superhero, take a screen shot of it and animate the image using the program ‘CrazyTalk’. Students can give the hero a voice and use it to deliver a message about making positive choices to be the best person you can be.
